He feels that a majority would vote for a Secession Ordinance if one is brought up. Reports on the city of Baltimore at the beginning of the Civil War. Writes that the city has been much more quiet, "tho' the streets are full of uniforms." He tried to send flour to someone and was informed that "no flour or provisions of any kind to be sent from the city." States that he took the silver and put it in the bank. Asks if he wants to keep his horses in town.

Reports to his uncle on the city of Baltimore at the beginning of the Civil War. States that everything is quiet. Asks him for some financial advice and states that there is no news in copper. Encloses some letters from others. Remarks upon the economy and rising prices in Baltimore, "No business of any kind doing, partners all drilling in the 'Home Guard' clerks in the 'Maryland Gds.' Flour $10 per bbl for family. Potatoes $1.00 to $1.25 per bus. I don't know what the poor people will do if this continues."

Writes to his uncle about Baltimore at the beginning of the Civil War. States that all is still quiet. Mentions some people who have evacuated but he feels these fears are groundless. Reports, "7 out of the 10 Delegates to the Assembly from Balt declared themselves to the Sheriff, who gave them their certificates, in fav[or] of passable measures & against Secession in any shape."

"...the whole of East B. [Baltimore] is strong for the Union, as the vote for Members of Convention will in all probability show, the whole City & State are." Informs that the military might be disbanded soon, "...as there is not now any probability of mobs & street fights..."

Undated, unsigned letter with a later note in pencil at top declaring, "Extract from Rodman's letter to Nancy Maxwell-." The writer gives her memory of a Friends Meeting where Rachel Howland rose and asked the congregation to pray for those in slavery as well as men fighting on the battlefields of the Civil War. States that it was very emotional scene.
