At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled, "Die Siegesfreiheitsanleheihe." Text refers to past German attacks on the English and Americans, with graphic description of the sinking of the Lusitania. Collection of posters printed by Liberty Loan Committee and released during World War I. Consists of five posters promoting bonds to support soldiers fighting in Europe. Featured in the collection is a poster related to a refugee crisis where 400,000 orphans were displaced.
