Addressed to "Dad, Bee, Don, + Jim." All goes well at "Pineapple Paradise." He's flown several times, only short missions so far. Life isn't too bad, except there's very little entertainment. They get a pass every two weeks or so, and most people go to the beach at Waikiki. As of yet, he's gotten no mail, and hopes his new address will reach his family soon. He also made a "mighty fine table" for his tent. The letter is dated as "Thursday July 20th." "Letters in a Box" dates the letter as July 20, 1944.

He is worried about Pam, but asks that his parents keep him posted on her health. They've flown a lot and his plane led a formation on a simulated bombing mission. He's getting "excellent training here -- far better than in the states." He asks his parents to send him Ken's address, and he plans to head to the beach and tan after concluding this letter. Addressed to "Folks." Everything is fine with him. He just started the 7th Air Force Gunnery School, which lasts about a month. They go to classes from 7:45AM-5PM, with a break for lunch. The classes are a little boring, but it's "good cheap life insurance." They went to Honolulu to see the 7th AAF baseball team play, and when they left at the beginning of the game, the "fliers" were up 13 to 1. Addressed to "Dad + Bee." He is still waiting for his first mission. Actress Betty Hutton put on a show but had to cut it short as she got sick, probably due to the "sultry weather." He really does not like this weather as it is sweltering and uncomfortable. He has yet to receive any mail, minus a letter from Pam sent to his old APO number. Everyone is feeling "down in the mouth" as an order came through requiring forty missions. Some were almost finished and would've been home for Christmas, but now it will take longer.

He enclosed a check [not included] to his father to purchase war bonds, as it's a smart investment. Life is the same and luckily the food isn't too bad. Between raids is the worst as that's when the boredom sets in. He hasn't seen Barry for a while as he has been on misisons.

Addressed to "Mildred and Eddie." He thanks Mildred and Eddie for the "assortment of eats" which will be "hungrily devoured." The food doesn't compare to the Waldorf, so the treats are very welcome. He mentions that the holidays came and went with only a turkey dinner to show for it. He now has seventeen missions under his belt and they've been flying regularly. He's hoping to be finished up soon as "the business of combat flying isn't my idea of a very practical career!." He should be going on leave soon and he's excited to "live like a human being again." He sends a "million thanks for the bay rum" which he almost threw out as it was concealed in a mouldy bread loaf. Oahu is overcrowded and he and his crew are stuck in the Mariana Islands. He's "as red as a lobster" because he's been lounging in the sun getting the "so-called forty-mission tan." He went to an officer's house and believes some "strange enlisted men" stole $170 out of his wallet. He's not too upset because he used most of his luck to complete forty missions.…

He was put on a list to have an administrative job, but he doesn't have any experience. He hopes he won't be sent for a refresher course before getting assigned to a non-combat job. He doesn't understand why the army is holding on to everyone. He hopes to call tomorrow on his father's birthday and thanks them for a "perfectly swell" leave at home. His interviewing officer placed a few calls to get him assigned at a redistribution center and they're holding him rather than sending him straight to Texas. He writes that he is incredibly lucky to have met a good man in the army. The camp is closing and they aren't taking any more people. He won a duplicate bridge tournament and received a free meal for two in town. He took a pilot friend of his. He'll let his parents know as soon as he is assigned and hopes they are catching a lot of trout.
