Possibly a copy in the hand of Brigadier General Eliakim P. Scammon to whom the telegram was probably sent. Informs that a scout, Low Jacobs, found a path fit for infantry, but not cavalry. Gives the number of Confederate forces in their area of West Virginia, and states that some are advancing to reinforce Raleigh. Writes, "Officers heard to say if we did not attack them soon they would us. They expect to advance with six thousand, take Fayette and clear the valley - This very doubtful."

The song is about the death of a young maiden, by what some have speculated to be tuberculosis, an awful circumstance which mirrors the tragic death of the young Colonel Ellsworth in Alexandria, Virginia. Lee is unable to attend an event in honor of "G. W. Hodge, the Confederate soldier whose life you saved." Furness invited Lee to attend a reunion of the Sixth Pennsylvania Cavalry, which Furness commanded. The reunion was to honor G. W. Hodge, whose life Furness saved "in the terrible days before Richmond." Lee cannot attend, but is glad to hear about stories like this, as they promote reconciliation between former enemies, "those of us who had ugly feelings in the 60s are now mellowed and living friends." Lee was invited because he was in charge of the United Confederate Veterans.…
