Writes that he has been informed by Captain [perhaps Samuel] Jefferds that Knox has recommended him to the Massachusetts State Legislature for a lieutenancy in the artillery, for which he is thankful. However, "if my accepting of a Lieutenancy should deprive me of my present Employment, I should wish to decline it." Wants to hold his rank in the Line of the Army, which he believes is a permanent appointment "so long as I behave myself upright and during your pleasure." Leaves it, however, to Knox to decide.

Asks whether the surveys have been submitted yet to the Massachusetts General Court's Committee on Eastern lands. Would like to find out about what recourse to the Court they have if any problems arise. Wonders especially how the Court might intervene in any conflicts between Knox and settlers claiming ownership or rights to his land.

Hears about an "impending War between France & England our wishes are decisively in favor of France." Writes that he has written to Count D'Estaing and Count de Rochambeau for a list of the officers of the royal Army and Navy of France that are members of the Society of the Cincinnati in order to execute their diplomas. Noted as a copy with the docket written in French.

I want some person in whom I could fully confide." Proposes that Price make arrangements to travel east with Knox, likely referring to Knox's lands in present-day Maine. Marked "private" on the docket.

The first letter, to Jeremiah Wadsworth, is contained on pages one and two. Both letters are written from Boston and dated 21 October 1788. In the letter, Knox informs Wadsworth that Mr. [Rufus] King arrived yesterday from New York, relating the news "that there is no congress nor any probability of one." Has decided to remain in Boston to attend personal business. Document contains three portions. The first, directed to Henry Knox from Richard Platt, asks whether Knox can spare any of the money he keeps in his bank account for the next week. Asks that if he can, he should send it with the bearer of the letter, Richard Smith. Below this is a receipt, signed by Richard Smith, certifying that Knox gave Smith, as an agent for Platt, one thousand dollars on 7 May 1789. The third section, signed by Knox and dated 4 June 1789, certifies that Knox received 500 dollars from Smith on behalf of Platt.

Discusses Ramsay's idea of publishing the names of all the officers in the Continental Army in the appendix of Ramsay's history. Although originally pleased with Ramsay's idea, Knox is now against the idea. "Upon examining the list I found it abounding with omissions and errors." Believes "the loss of papers" can lead to misinformation and inaccuracies, such as officers who were transferred or left the service. Says that he was "convinced that your motive for the publication was to perpetuate honorably the names of the officers of the Army," but now Knox is not sure of this.
