Appears to be collected information about clothiers and commissaries. Mentions James Wilkinson, Clothier General at Philadelphia in 1779 and Otis and Henley, clothiers in Boston. Notes, "About this time- shoes were provided for the army by Exchanging hides with shoe makers all over the Country- for what purpose Commissaries of hides were appointed- this business was extensive, and irregularly preformed some returns are here, of the Commissaries but very little information can be collected from them. Includes two charts. The first indicates, "MArch 9th 1779 Congress resolved that the Infantry of these States for the next campaign, be composed of 80 battalions." Lists states and corresponding quotas and required troops for 1779. Lists numbers of men furnished, separated by Continental troops and militia. Includes total number of Continental troops and militia. Second chart contains an estimate of militia employed in addition to those cited in the first chart. Traveled the previous day from Bellefont to Stevenson, Alabama. States that divisions led by Generals [Jefferson C.] Davis and [Philip] Sheridan crossed the Tennessee River the previous day. Informs Nancy that corps led by Generals Alexander M. McCook and Thomas L. Crittenden will cross, or have already crossed the Tennessee between Stevenson and Chattanooga, Tennessee. They defeated Bragg, Johnson, and the Richmond army even though they were outnumbered five to one. They fell back here to fortify as the Confederates are planning to attack. He calls Stones River a skirmish in comparison with this battle. He has seen nine total days of hard battle in the war: six at Stones River, one at Liberty Gap, and two here in the Battle of Chickamauga.

He expects the regiments to be consolidated as they are too small to hold their position alone. His regiment is pleased that Vallandigham lost in Ohio even without the soldiers' votes and with the new governor of Pennsylvania.

He describes the Battle of Chickamauga: "For two long days we fought the brave men of longstreets corps from Richmond they having two to our one…many were to be he[a]rd crying for help as we would have to walk over them and turn our ears to their cries." He wants to send her his diary of the past year and is keeping one for this year as well.

General Thomas replaced General Rosecrans "on the account of Brag driving him back" to Chattanooga where Grant is now in command. He heard that Hooker defeated Bragg. They have not encountered Price since he left or Marmaduke since he attacked a few weeks ago "with 6,000 men against 600 and got whipped." "Rebeldom is about played out."
