Writes to Major General Hitchcock about exchanging prisoners. Believes that prisoners not wanting to return to Confederate service should be exchanged first. "Those who preferred Northern prisons to a return to the rebel service were invited to step to the front. I think this is wrong. Those who do not wish to go back are the ones who it is most desirable to exchange. If they do not wish to serve in the rebel Army they can return to us, after exchange, and avoid it." The retained copy book record of army officers' letters and telegraphs concerning the affairs of the Twentieth Infantry. Discusses the removal of the Winnebago tribe of Indians, the plan to capture a chief named Big Hawk, and the training and rations for soldiers. Most of the letters were composed by W.N. Thomas, with a signature at the bottom. It is possible that he wrote and signed these copies himself, since those letters from other men are written in different hands, making it possible that each man was putting his own entries into the book and signing them. A detailed personal letter of condolence for the death of Bedford Morgan during the second Seminole War, written to Morgan's brother, Judge Morgan of Baton Rouge, at the insistence of their sister, Ann Gibbes Barker. Explains the circumstances of Morgan's death, as one of eighteen killed on a mission to trade with the Seminole Indians. Claims that the surprise attack and murders by the Seminoles violated a recent peace agreement made with General Macomb at Fort King. Describes the Seminoles as "the most evil & treacherous savages that ever existed."

Title: [Twenty Star American "Abolitionist Flag"]

Large American cotton flag with only 20 stars. Fragile. The flag consists of 9 alternating red or white cloth strips sewn together with 20 somewhat irregular stars. The blue field is mottled and the flag has staining. The flag is identified as an "Abolitionist Flag" because it drops the slave states from the star field. (Measurements are approximate.) Discovered in Andover, Ohio, and may have been made there. Thought to show support for abolitionists like Brown.

This document is a copy of The Massachussetts Centinel. The newspaper contains a short article concerning the ratification of the Constitution by North Carolina, headed by a woodcut cartoon of all the states, as pillars, in place, except Rhode Island. Another article criticizes Rhode Island. Another notes that people fond of the number thirteen might see Vermont brought in to reach that number. News from London, other foreign locales, and from places around the United States. Also contains ship news and advertisements.

Dating based on uniform (Federal-style dated to 4/1861 per Lord & Wise). Bonham holds a hat with non-standard insigna (Palmetto?). Bonham served in the Confederate Congress from 1862-1863 and then served as governor of SC from 1863. Ink inscription on mount: "Milledge L. Bonham, S.C." Portrait shows some white insect damage.

Typed speech accompanied by holographic notes (on "Wrest Park" stationery) for Guild Hall speech discussing Great Britain and Africa. He also details the success of his steamboat business and mentions the "virtuous exertions and enterprising spirit" of Peale's son, Rembrandt, also an artist. Fulton may have studied miniature painting with the elder Peale early in his life; both studied with Benjamin West in England.
