Title: [Notes regarding claims of officers]

States the two commissioned officers should produce evidence that a claimant was wounded in the service of the United States. Says the evidence needs to include the time and object of the expedition the officer was on as well as the name of the commanding officer. Also, two respectable physicians should certify the claimant's situation. This evidence needs to be heard in an open court. Notes the Secretary of War is authorized to deal with each situation and that fraud cases are to be heard before the House of Representatives. Date written in a different hand with a black pen.

Provides a list of payments made to the 10 employees of the War Department for the second quarter of 1793. A total of $1,695.18 was paid out on 2 July. All the employees except Secretary Knox signed the document, saying they received their money. The document notes Knox has a salary of $3,000 per annum and his chief clerk makes $800 per annum. The assistant clerks make $500 per annum, while the messenger makes $250. Signed by John Stagg, Constant Freeman, Jr., Benjamin Bankson, Philip Audebert, Nathan Jones, James Henry Laugier, David Henley, Jacob Hoffman, and Frederick Sprig.

Was shocked to read about the death of Mrs. Lear and her child in the newspaper (a reference to Mary "Polly" Long Lear, who had married Tobias Lear in 1790, and died in the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia). Provides a breakdown of the War Department's salaries for the third quarter of 1793. Includes the salaries for Henry Knox, John Stagg, Philip Audebert, Nathan Jones, James Laugier, Jacob Hoffman, William Burton, and Frederick Sprig. The total amount of the salaries is $1546.47. Knox received $750 for three months as Secretary of War. He made a total of $3,000 for the year. Says "the Inhabitants are extravigent [sic] in their demands, they take ever[y] advantage of us knowing that we must submit, for we cannot proceed on without their assistance - from this state of act please to inform me, must I proceed on at this great expence of more than 4 Dolls pr day when on business, and as much when detaind by Mr Vesey Ill health." Says it will take 20 fair days to complete "the business," which appears to be something to do with squatters on Knox's Maine lands. Believes he will need another 50 dollars. Includes comments, time of enlistment, and place of appointment. On verso, contains "Proof of Effectives" chart, noting officers present and absent.
