The inscription on recto, around a bust portrait of George Washington (based on Houdon) reads in Latin: "George Washington Supremo Duci exercituum adsertori libertatis. Comitia Americana." The verso shows Washington and his officers looking towards Boston in the distance as the British evacuate, and reads in Latin "Hostibus primo Fugatis." Dent at bottom edge, recto. The "Hiram Irvines are largely on the increase just now, and I fear the party has not the right kind of men at the front to lead them off." Feels it is possible that Congress will enact a workable monetary policy: "what is really needed, next to the resumption of specie payments, is a currency, that will at all times adapt itself to the business wants of the country." Written as Secretary of the Treasury.

Title continues: "on the 16th Nov[embe]r 1776, and Survey'd immediately after by order of his Lordship by Claude Joseph Sauthier. To which is added the Attack made to the North by the Hessians. Survey'd by Order of Lieut[enan]t Gen[era]l Knyphansen." Shows Fort Washington in northern Manhattan. Published "as the Act directs" in London on March 1, 1777, by permission of the Comissioners of Trade and Plantations. Hudson River and troop movements are hand colored. Kenneth Nebenzahl's "Battle Plans of the American Revolution" page 116 notes two later states.

Sutter was a pioneer of California who was ruined by the famous discovery of gold at his mill in 1848. Wright was a businessman, inventor, and U.S. representative from California.

Corwin served as governor of Ohio, U.S. congressman and senator, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1850-1853), and U.S. minister to Mexico (1861-1864).

Tells Blair that he has been deemed deficient in his French exam at West Point Military Academy, and asks for Blair to intercede on his behalf, so that he might be reinstated, and continue at school. Jackson cannot understand how he did so poorly, and tries to assure Blair that he has been a good student and well behaved. Calls on Blair as an old friend of the family to do him this favor. Jackson would eventually graduate from West Point.

Worries that Colonel Ogden will not extend the Cumberland road any farther that he already has, unless forced to do so. Feels that the current situation, with both the road and government in general, is "adverse to the public interest." Bemoans the fact that the opponents of Jackson and the Democrats control almost all aspects of the local Illinois government, and says that the only way to win these back will be with the help of the President. Written two months before Kinnard was killed in an explosion aboard the steamboat Flora on the Ohio River.

The board consists of presidential appointees and members of Congress. At this time Simon Cameron was among those on the board.
