Visited with Amanda's uncle, Allen Goodridge, and her cousin as well. States that he has not been to Washington, D.C. for two months. Is worried that reports about casualties she receives are greatly exaggerated. Says he went down to where the enemy was and made a treaty with the Sergeant there not to shoot at each other. The enemy Sergeant was so pleased he shook his hand.

He writes that he does not have picket duty because the enemy has left Munson's Hill and vicinity. The troops have been ready to march everyday and they go out in "stack columns" prepared to fight. Writes that they took the hill after the enemy left and laid on the ground all night and that it was cold enough to freeze. Grant asked his permission, on about 7 June, 1848, to "place a bag of public money in my private trunk, saying at the time, that he considered it the most safe place for its conveyance on the march which we were preparing to commence in a few days." Henri was a miniature painter from France.
