Written from Head Quarters. Humphreys writes, "His Excellency [George Washington] desires you will please to order Ammunition & Flints to be issue to the remainder of Col. Weissenfel's [probably Frederick Weisenfels, Lieutenant-Colonel New York Levies] Regt of Levies of the State of New York, for which order the Quarter Mastr now awaits upon you." Below the note and his signature, Knox notes an order to Mr. [John] Ruddock, Commissary at Fishkill, of four thousand eight hundred musket cartridges.

Informs Colonel Hughes, Deputy Quartermaster of Military Stores (or any of his deputies at Fishkill), that harness makers formerly of Colonel Baldwin's regiment are to join Captain [Thomas] Patten's company "for peculiar public reasons." The company will march from New Windsor the following day. Says he will be "answerable for the measure, to the commander in chief and Colonel Pickering." Knox signs a note on the bottom of the page, indicating "Roman Hazard" should be ordered to join them at New Windsor as soon as possible.

Informs a bereaved wife of her husband's death on the James River on 20 September 1781 from a stomach ailment. Discusses the circumstances of his death and burial, offers condolence, and mentions who will gather and transport his belongings. The deceased officer was Captain Lt. Baxter Howe (1748-1781) of Lamb's Artillery Regiment. The Continental Army was then engaged in the siege of Yorktown.

Knox seems to have taken care of Mr. Howe's personal effects for Mary. Says she is awaiting "Capt. Lieutt. Hubbell" so she can "make a Settlement." Tells Knox that Mr. Howe probably had a months pay on him, as he was recently paid at Head of Elk, Maryland. Says she needs the money and asks that he speak to Captain Hubbell to settle the issue.
