One engraving entitled "Wouski" dated January 23, 1788. Features a man and a woman on a hammock in what looks like a ships hold. Below them is a coil of rope, a small barrel labeled Jamaica Rum, and a monogramed trunk. The woman is black and the man is white. On the bottom of the engraving it reads, "Far be the noise Of Kings & Crowns from us whose gentle souls Our kinder fates have steerd another way. Free as the forest birds well pair together Without remembering who our fathers were And in soft murmurs interchange our souls."

Of particular interest is nine entries of ships selling enslaved people from the Congo, Mandingo, Angola, Windward coast, and Gold coast regions of Africa. The ships advertising the sales are; the Schooner James under captain Prebble carrying 80 enslaved people, the Brig Washington carrying enslaved people from the Windward coast, the schooner Edward & Edmund carrying 108 enslaved people from the Mandingo tribe, the ship John carrying 380 enslaved people from…

The caption indicated that he is seaching for the location of the pockets that have become a new fashion.

One colored engraving titled "Lady Godina's Rout; Or Peeping-Tom spying out Pope-Joan" dated March 12, 1796. Features a room full of men and women playing cards. One woman in the front of the image wears a low cut gown. A man leans over her shoulder watching her. It is made evident that he is not paying attention to his job cutting the wick on the candle as he is about to cut into the candle. On the rear of the engraving are two fashion prints from France.

Issue contains a few interesting articles; one on Daniel Webster and the possibility of a presidential candidacy, one on James Madison's life after his time in the White House, an article concerning a fire at a jail that was holding a group of African Americans, as well as on the abolition of slavery among all British colonies. The paper also contains ads, public notices and an article about catching a sea serpent.

The first ad is for an enslaved man named Tom who escaped from the publisher of the newspaper E.S. Thomas. A letter from William Wilberforce to Reverend Mr. Jones. Wilberforce asks Jones to leave the publications he brought with his friend Mr. Pringle as he is travelling about a lot and has too much baggage already. He also mentions that Jones had asked about joining the Church Missionary Society and wished to go to Haiti. Wilberforce is very excited about the prospect of Jones going to Haiti and helping that "most interesting community" and promises to recommend Jones to a few friends of his in the society.

Wilberforce sends a quick note to his friend regarding a mutual friend of theirs William Hill. Hill had taken a trip to Bath and in his absence made arrangements for all mail and parcels he received to be kept for him at a shop in the area. Wilberforce wanted to let Young know that he wasn't being ignored. The letter is accompanied by JB00024.

A letter from Mary Brown Davis to Major General Wool regarding helping "contraband" or escaped enslaved people who have taken refuge in Fort Monroe. Davis outlines her history and where she lived before Chicago. She mentions having been born in Fauquier County and lived at Alexandria Washington, and Mount Vernon. She also mentions editing a newspaper in Wheeling and Winchester. Davis declares that she is strongly Union but loves her native South and prays that the rebellion is crushed and peace restored. A printed and autograph document from the State of North Carolina to the Sheriff of Chatham ordering that the sheriff set a sale of 4 enslaved men. The sale is to repay a debt owed to Murdock McKenzie & Co. by William Thompson. The amount to be raised is 23 pounds 7 shillings, as well as interest and a further sum of 2 dollars and 2 half cents to pay for the cost of the suit. The money should be kept by the sheriff for Murdock McKenzie & Co. until the next meeting of the court.

Title: Mandate of Payment

A mandate of payment for M. Boutin for the work of the enslaved person Sam. Sam worked on the public chain gang for twenty one days at the rate of twenty five cents a day. The payment from the city to M. Boutin is for "Five Piastres Twenty-Five Cents." The document is written in French, but is accompanied by a translation.

A manumission notice that Barthelemy Campanel plans to emancipate Hanna an enslaved woman of about 60 years of age. The notice states that if anyone has an objection to this manumission they are to file the objection with the Parish Court within 40 days of the notice being posted. On the back of the notice is a statement by the parish court that no objection has been made and as a result the seal of the court has been affixed.
