Post-war, he was commandant of the Norfolk and New York Navy yards, commander of the Asiatic Squadron, governor of the Naval Asylum at Philadelphia, and superintendent of the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C.

Maury... that all legal and political disabilities imposed by the fourteenth amendment of the constitution of the United States, by reason of participation in the rebellion, be, and they are hereby removed." Includes a printed note on verso that the bill was read before the House 31 January 1876. Includes a handwritten note on verso, likely in Cox's hand, noting that the bill "Just passed 1 P.M. Friday March 4. 76."

Explains the dignity and honor of being well dressed. Requests relief (meaning money). Assures Knox that he will not be "one of the Continent's bad Bargains," explaining a common reference to those who have joined the service to "amuse and gratify" instead of for Howard's noble reasons…
