Reports that the corps in the detachment at West Point have been dissolved, except for those soldiers whose terms of service have not expired. These 500 men will be commanded by Colonel [Henry] Jackson, presumably at West Point. There is also one corps of artillery commanded by Major Sebastian Bauman. Asks Steuben to instruct Jackson on the mode by which the remaining soldiers will be mustered and inspected. Plans to depart soon for Boston, leaving Jackson in charge.

Refers to a recent letter from Steuben transmitting papers from General [Jethro] Sumner of North Carolina. Discusses matters pertaining to the Society of the Cincinnati, referring to an upcoming meeting in May at Philadelphia. Writes that many opponents of the society claim it "was formed in Europe to overturn our happy constitutions." Refers to objections raised by Aedanus Burke of South Carolina, who argues that the society is a hereditary nobility. Reports that Legislature of Massachusetts has chosen a committee to investigate associations that promote hereditary nobility.

Date of letter is cited as 8 January 1786, however, docket notes this letter was actually written 8 January 1787. GLC02437.03428 is possibly a response to this letter.

Sullivan, the Governor of New Hampshire, writes that based on their long acquaintance and friendship, he takes the liberty to introduce his good friend Paine Wingate, delegate to Congress from New Hampshire. Writes that "he is a stranger in New York and I shall esteem it a great favor if you will please to make him acquainted with some of the first characters there. You will find him the scholar the Gentleman, and the man of sense every mark of attention paid to him by you will be gratefully acknowledged."

Body of the letter and signature in the hand of Robert Pemberton, Knox's aide. Discusses an upcoming convention (the Constitutional Convention) in Philadelphia. "The late approbation of Congress of a Convention to be held at Philadelphia in May next will it is presumed remove all objections as to its legality. - If men of truly great minds should compose the Majority of the convention something of importance may be effected. But if a number of trifling Characters get together we shall only be deluded instead of being benefited." Noted in the docket as a copy.

Replies to a letter in which Stoughton informed Knox that Maurice (or Morris) Kelly, one of Knox's servants, recently solicited him for employment; Stoughton refused because Kelly had not obtained a discharge from Knox (refer to GLC02437.03845). Knox confirms that Kelly had asked him for a discharge, but Knox had not granted it due to the short notice. Kelly then informed Knox his child was sick, Knox offered him a discharge, and Kelly left with no notice. Knox will therefore not hire him again.

Says there has been illegal sales of some of these lands for the non-payment of taxes by squatters. Notes he has employed a Mr. Otis (Harrison Gray Otis) of Boston to help him with this situation. Comments "As soon as the lands shall be entirely disentangled, which will not be a work of much difficulty they will be for sale." Reports that Otis can inform him on how the matter currently stands.

Written in Russell's hand, but is signed by both Russell and James Sullivan. References a letter they wrote to Knox on 9 December 1792. That letter received no answer, so they are repeating its contents in this letter. They are writing in their capacity as committee members appointed by the directors of the Middlesex Canal Company. The directors are happy that Knox is friendly to their plan. Says they are under "a greater necessity to procure a man who is skilled in the business of Canalling who can point us to the place where under all circumstances, the canal ought to be cut." Heard…

Asks the letter to be returned if he has left Philadelphia. Has been absent from Boston for some time, but reports that Mrs. Sullivan saw Sarah Lyon Flucker at the commencement. Says "I combatted for you at Lincoln County and had one Ely who had appeared agt your interest recognized with sureties for his good behavior." "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.

They would also like a recommendation of a man "who is skilled in the business of Canalling, who can point us to the place where, under all Circumstances, the Canal ought to be cut." Will ask Mr. Morris if Mr. Weston can be spared to help on Sullivan's project at the Middlesex Canal Company.
