Title: Retained draft of Hancocks' instructions to Massachusetts legislature

One manuscript written by John Hancock dated circa 1788. Pertaining to the selection of electors to vote for the President of the United States. He believes that such an act would not only strengthen the relations between the states but establish respectability in countries overseas. Hancock also promised that it would not weaken the powers of the individual states.

Mentions Henry Clay, who was a candidate for the Whig nomination, and says he was informed there are many states where the votes would be given to him instead of Clay, including Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. Wants Field, a Washington Attorney, to appear on his behalf. Also indicates that he wants a new trustee appointed, because he was in Africa. The letter was written from the White Nile River.

Based on the accompanying letter (GLC 7731.01), created by Miss Lena, who gave the potholder to Frederick Douglass as a gift after reading his narrative. Depicts two African Americans (one male and one female) holding hands and dancing against a caramel colored background. Text is stitched above and below the dancing figures. Appears to be a form of needlepoint stitching.
