Wilson discusses the latest developments on tobacco, as well as other news. He mentions that he wants to see what course General Lee takes before he does anything. It is unclear exactly what he means by this.

Wilson is without a doubt a staunch confederate. He hears of the death of Miller's uncle, which saddens him. He likens the union troops that "brought about the present state of affairs" to "devils." He suggests, by the fall of the Confederacy, that the Israel of the south must lie elsewhere. "What He [God] does is good though we can't comprehend it."
