Knox offers his opinions regarding military matters and national security following the anticipated peace between the United States and Great Britain. Suggests maintaining a strong militia, noting "Every method should be devised to make the profession of arms honorable..." Recommends annual exhibitions of war to be attended by "first men of the community," stating that, "To an enlightened people arguments are unnecessary to enforce a truth so obvious. This is the moment to form habits which shall give a lustre to the American character." Advocates universal distribution of arms in America…

Declares, "The soldiers of the regiments of this garrison have been tolerably quiet until last night, when the behaviour of most or all of the regiments was totally repugnant to discipline, & in many instances highly mutinous... the rioters appeared to have no particular object in view..." Offers to take the responsibility of granting officers' furlough requests, if Washington thinks it appropriate. Knox' retained draft.

Return issued for the rations for 8 men over 4 days, from 10 March to 13 March. A total of 32 rations were issued. Appears to be for "ye Andrew CMarshal." Signed by Captain John Howell of the main guard and John Doughty as fort major of West Point. Note at bottom says this a copy of an original which was lost. Docket signed by Jonathan Edwards(?) stating the rations arrived from contractors.

Written in the hand of Samuel Shaw, this is Henry Knox's copy, and is docketed by Knox. An anonymous address to the officers of the Army, along with a call for a general meeting of officers. This particular copy was sent to the officers at West Point. Gives high-minded praise to the troops, extolling their virtue, bravery, and patriotism -- but then transitions into an emotional-laden section about America's inability to provide for them after the war is over. Says "If this then be your treatment, while the swords you wear are necessary for the defence of America - what have you to expect…

Says the Society was created to perpetuate "the remembrance of this great event [victory in the Revolution], as the mutual friendships which have been formed under the pressure of common danger, and in numerous instances cemented by the blood of the parties." One of its goals is to "preserve inviolate those exalted rights and liberties of human nature, for which they have fought and bled, and without which the high rank of rational being is a curse, instead of a blessing."
