Deed for the sale of land within the Waldo patent from Henry Knox to Israel Thorndike. Also signed by Lucy Knox, Thomas Jackson, Mary Lincoln, and signed and witnessed by Samuel Cooper, Nathan Dane, Martin Lincoln and Gridley Thaxter. Next to the signatures note stating deed was "cancelled the 16 Oct 1804." The bottom half of the third page has been lost.

In regard to his forthcoming surrender to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Lee writes requests "a suspension of hostilities pending the discussion of the terms of surrender." A endorsement by General Edward O.C Ord appears on the lower fold, made at 11:55 AM and indicating that the letter was read and acted upon by Ord's and General Philip H. Sheridan's troops. Letter marked "Duplicate."

Shares Hobart's sentiment of missing home and friends. Explains that his folks have moved to another house and that trade has been opened for "people living on each side of Penobscot Bay." Mentions that "a Bill for Banks, a Bill for Classifying the Militia, and a Bill for raising additional revenue" are the objects which have had a lot of attention in the present negotiations at the Congress of Vienna.

Discusses political matters of the day, commenting on the correspondence of John Quincy Adams, Albert Gallatin, and J.A. Bayard, who were negotiating the Treaty of Ghent to end the War of 1812. Discusses a bank bill.

The first, dated 18 July, acknowledges the receipt of payment for stationery ordered from Wright & Gill and reminds Knox of an outstanding bill for non-stationery items (see GLC02437.00010). The second, written a few days later, acknowledges the receipt of payment for those non-stationery items. Wright & Gill was a London stationery company operated by Thomas Wright and William Gill.

Indicates that he is sending Knox four trunks and a case of books, which have been bound in canvass because of the rising cost of leather. Longman was a London book…

States that he is sending Knox five trunks and a box of books, and a statement of Knox's account for 1772 [not included]. Longman was a London bookseller.

He wishes to exchange it for a complete one. Oliver one of the founders of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the American Philosophical Society. He published an "Essay on Comets" the previous year.
