Writes "the enemy's pickets in plain sight it is funny the pickets of the two armies are within thirty yds of one another and they sometimes talk across to one another." Writes about a Dr. Gaines, the man who owns the land they on which they are camped. "...we are on a rabid old secesh has been sent to Fortress Monroe they caught him making signals to the enemy from his house. he said he would dig up the bodies of all the Union soldiers that were buried on his farm and throw them into the Chickahominy river..." Written from camp of the 3rd Massachusetts Battery.

Also says that he no longer supports [General George] McClellan, whom he now believes to be a "Copper Head of the Darkest [Die]..." Includes an embossed seal in the upper left hand corner.

He concludes by thanking Ogden for her photograph and her kindness. Envelope includes a three cent stamp.

Says he will not talk to any of the "boys" from the hospital until he has some photographs. Concludes by thanking Ogden and requesting that she give his love to the other nurses as well. Envelope includes a three cent stamp.

Writes, "...if we leave here for washington i do not think we will Return without fighting they are gathering an immence army there for that purpose but whether we will be engaged in the first Battle or not I cannot tell... i do not think we are in much danger of course we are liable to picked off [sic] by cecessionists for they have every chance while we are on picket... our picket has taken about between five and six thousand dols worth of contraband goods since we have been here..."
