The land had been granted to Richardson on 20 November 1835. Witnessed by George R. Robertson. An autograph and signed note by J.H. Griffin on the second page indicates that the sale was recorded in the Liberty County records on 2 May 1841.

Title: [Certificate of Mary Smith's right to Texas land and her transfer of that land to A.J. Brightwell]

Certified, on 7 August 1843, that Mary Smith, a widow who came to Texas in August 1842, was entitled to a conditional grant of 640 acres in San Augustine County, Texas (accordance with a Texas congressional act passed 15 January 1842). Beneath it is a transfer of Smith's certificate to A.J. Brightwell dated 6 March 1850 and a attestation to the transfer by the clerk, P.M. Graham dated 18 March 1850. At the bottom of page two, George W. Smyth, the commissioner of the General Land Office, certified on 6 August 1850 that this document was a true copy.

A note signed by Shun indicates he received payment on 8 May 1852. Document designated "No. 89" and stamped "paid."

Crocket of San Francisco (not included) who he wants Cripps to assist in deciphering a grant. Is still awaiting the notes from a conference Cripps was to send and explains that he may need to "make war" with Ward, using the notes as leverage. Mentions an upcoming interview with President Pierce and is concerned about his silence on the breach of trust, the center of which Gadsden believes is Ward and his cohorts. Promises that he and his treaty "will stand erect"…

Gadsden is only disappointed that the provision regarding "the grant" has not been struck from the treaty, even after Ward had been outed. Rants about Ward being obtuse and treacherous and includes his thoughts on others' betrayals. Included clipping rebuts the rumor that Cripps became Gadsden's Secretary and Minister to Mexico because they were related. No postmark. Imprint in upper left…

Continues in this vein and links this possible outcome to Ward, who he feels is continuing to betray him. Postmarked 8 March (differs from Gadsden's dating), Washington, DC. Imprint in upper left corner depicts a capitol building surrounded by "Congress, Platmer & Smith."
