Copy of a telegram to Brigadier General Eliakim P. Scammon possibly in his hand. Marked cypher. Colonel White states that the Confederate cavalry came within sight last night. Says that he sent his cavalry force to the front and ordered them to attack at 2 AM. They are keeping a lookout. Year inferred from similar documents in the collection and from Scammon's rank as General.

Author's name is illegible but signs as Major Commanding. Informs that the companies will be sent as directed, the ferry boat was destroyed and that the men are back in their quarters. Reports on shots being fired at their camp but that no one was killed. States that he has no more paper and asks if the Colonel will send this on to Colonel Eliakim P. Scammon of the 23rd Ohio. Year inferred from Scammon's rank.

Published by J. Wrigley at 27 Chatham Street in New York. Marked No. 844 at the top. Sung to the tune of "Annie Lisle." That song is an 1857 ballad by Boston, Massachusetts songwriter H. S. Thompson. The song is about the death of a young maiden, by what some have speculated to be tuberculosis, an awful circumstance which mirrors the tragic death of the young Colonel Ellsworth in Alexandria, Virginia. Lee is unable to attend an event in honor of "G. W. Hodge, the Confederate soldier whose life you saved." Furness invited Lee to attend a reunion of the Sixth Pennsylvania Cavalry, which Furness commanded. The reunion was to honor G. W. Hodge, whose life Furness saved "in the terrible days before Richmond." Lee cannot attend, but is glad to hear about stories like this, as they promote reconciliation between former enemies, "those of us who had ugly feelings in the 60s are now mellowed and living friends." Lee was invited because he was in charge of the United Confederate Veterans.…
