Announcement of the assassination of President Lincoln on page four. Also includes a front page article entitled "feeling of the people of the north toward the south." The Whig was the first newspaper in the South to print the news of the assassination. The paper is uncut.

Inlcudes news on the raising of the flag at Fort Sumter and surrender of Gen. Johnston in North Carolina. Also contains news concerning the arrest of the Lincoln assassination conspirators. Prints a letter from Edwin Booth concerning the assassination. An inscription on the upper right-hand corner of the first page reads Maj. L.H. Warren Comndr. 38th U.S. Inft C'ald."

Prints Lincoln's first Emancipation Proclamation. Said to be the first printing of the proclamation in an abolitionist newspaper. Headline reads "Proclamation of Emancipation - Freedom of the Slaves in Rebellious States on the First Day of January." Peninsula campaign, the draft and contrabands. Inscription "J. Cullanan Jr."

It was from Fort Abraham Lincoln on May 17, 1876 that the fateful Yellowstone Expedition under command of General Alfred H. Terry, the Department Commander, marched out to the music of "Garry Owen" played by the band of the 7th Cavalry. Gen. Terry's headquarters were at that time at St. Paul, Minn."

Title: Burgoyne's Lamentations. [Sarcastic pro-American poem re: defeat at Saratoga]

Broadside poem printed in two columes of type; poem beginning "Good heav'ns! The poem praises Gates, Stark, Arnold and Lincoln. It is written as if Burgoyne were narrating events surrounding his defeat at Saratoga. Compare to similar copy in Kingston-Burgoyne papers, GLC 4764, "Burgoyne's Lament" printed at Boston.

Expresses his hopes that Robert Walker, the territorial governor of Kansas, would not use military force against the pro-slavery people of Lawrence, Kansas, and reflects on James Madison's wise refusal to send a military force to the Hartford Convention during the War of 1812. Insists that "One decision of a court will overturn all that [Kansas slavery advocates] could do," and cites the demise of the New Court party in Kentucky. Lewis Cass was then vice-president. McLean was a supreme court justice. Letter shows docketing in Cass's hand.
