Lists stores delivered to Hodgdon, Commissary General of Military Stores, in Philadelphia. Ordnance stores were delivered by Mr. [Richard] Frothingham, a field commissary. Lists items such as brass cannons, howitzers, mortars, drag chain, wadhooks, ladles, and gunner belts, among others. Docketed by Samuel Shaw.

Discusses the difficulties of inducing good men to serve. Suggest the establishment of military academies. Discusses the problems of the Continental Army with reference to the activities in New York. Praises Gerge Washington and Nathanael Greene. Believes the Battle of Long Island was their one chance to win in New York. Discusses the fortification of Harlem Heights.

Reports that General George Washington has ordered him to take southward all the arms and accoutrements possible. The demand has been indicated to Washington in letters from the Marquis de Lafayette. The supplies were needed for the upcoming Siege of Yorktown. He requests specific supplies listed on an accompanying sheet (GLC02437.01161). The Board of War and Ordnance was responsible for supplying troops in the field.

Signed by Hodgdon, Commissary General of Military Stores. Hodgdon notes that in addition to this list, "five hundred stand of arms will be forwarded... for the State of Maryland."

Informs Knox he has been transferred to Virginia and, per the General's wish, will remain the Quartermaster's Department. Praises General Nathanael Greene's recent campaign in South Carolina.

Written by Brigadier General Knox to Major Bauman. References Bauman's letter of 10 August 1781. Says he cannot give him a transfer as Colonel Popkins, who was supposed to replace him, was sick. Says all other line officers are not available because they are employed in the court of inquiry involving Colonel John Crane. Says he can leave for a few days if General McDougall is content having a captain replace him. Recommends Captain Frothingham as his replacement.

Says he cannot leave West Point until tomorrow, when he will send letters and settle the situation. Reports on some of the heavy and light brass cannons at West Point, and says some need chains, timbers, and carriages. Says "many things are wanting here" and has requested the commissary to give him reasons why…
