Lutterloh, Commissary of Forage, writes to Woodhull, Assistant State Agent. Lutterloh writes, "I requested you some time ago to deliver to General Knox six Tuns of Hay, for the use of his Horses- I repeat the request, and wish you would deliver it directly- as the generals horses are in Want of Hay..." On verso, contains details of a hay delivery 8 and 9 February (no year cited). Also includes notes from 9 and 14 March indicating that receipts were given to the persons who delivered the hay for General Knox's horses. Verso signed by Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp.

Stewart, Commissary to the Army, is ordered by Washington to provide "four days provisions" to enable a surprise attack on the British. General Benjamin Lincoln led the attack down the Hudson River, but the British were alerted, fortified their positions on the Harlem River, and fended off the attack. In the handwriting of Washington's military secretary and aide-de-camp Tench Tilghman.

In July 1782 the Earl of Sherlburne took over the ministry and in early August he agreed to enter formal negotiations with the Americans. Faded with some losses supplied with pen facsimile. Written to his brother. Preparing materials for his departure to meet the army on the Hudson (North) River. Also discusses his precarious financial situation. "You are but little acquainted with the situation of my affairs if you suppose I have money at my command -- the contrary from bad years, bad crops or bad management is so true, that I find it difficult to support my family...." He is trying to raise money by loan, sale of negroes or any other way. In any case he will pay for his nephew's education.

"The Confederation dearly points out the right of deciding all controversies concerning the boundaries of any state... the present case shows the necessity and utility of such powers being vested in the United States and not in any one separate state lest the whole should be involved in a war by the Rashness, imprudence or prejudice of one or more states... Parliamentary Habeas Corpus backed by the military arm... I ask who is to observe the writ? the Militia? Would it not have been more eligible and regular for the Supreme Judicial Court to have issued and directed a Habeas Corpus."
