Title: [Facts pertaining to a land dispute between William Tudor and General Jackson]

Circa date is based on the year the dispute took place. Jackson (possibly Henry Jackson of Massachusetts) and Tudor, acting as agents for separate companies, made offers for the same parcel of land to the Eastern Committee for Lands. A competition for the lands ensued after Jackson accused Tudor of driving up the land price. Presents details of the case. Possibly refers to William Tudor, a member of George Washington's staff during the Revolutionary War, and later a Massachusetts statesman.

Franklin, writing as president of the Pennsylvania Council, discusses the strife in the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania, land that was claimed by both Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Acknowledges the "affliction" of the Yankee settlers, describes the testimony heard by the Council, and offers safe passage for an agent. The Connecticut settlers were later given clear title to the land, but John Franklin was imprisoned for treason. The conflict arose under the Articles of Confederation and helped justify support of a new Constitution.

Washington writes on behalf of his nephew, Corbin Washington, who "is inclined to enter into a Mercantile walk of life." Washington says he knows little of Corbin but asks his former aide Tilghman "if it would be convenient for you to take him into your counting House, and immediately under your eye...." Tilghman died later this year.

Title: Contemporary copy of Pendleton's brief autobiography

Originally written July 1793. Contemporary copy. Docketed on verso: "Concise history of Judge Pendleton's life written by himself. Copied." Six years before his death Pendleton outlined his biography, focusing mostly on his political career. In part: "I have often contemplated [my life]... as a rare and extraordinary instance and pathetically exclaimed 'Not unto me o Lord! Not unto me o Lord! but unto thy name be the praise..." It was first printed in the Richmond Enquirer 11 April 1818 which is the text for Mays, Letters and Papers of Edmund Pendleton, 2: 605-607.

Document requesting compensation from the British for the loss of their lands in the United States during the Revolutionary War. "That in consideration of the loyal attachment and exertions of the Six Nations in his Majesty's service during the American war, and the loss of their lands in consequence thereof...." Seeks confirmation of a land grant. Norton was an adopted Chief of the Iroquois Indian nation.

Small broadside, disbound and signed by Belknap. Virginian St. George Tucker wrote a 1796 Dissertation on Slavery, proposing abolition. As part of his research, he queried colleagues with a list of eleven questions which are printed here. Jeremy Belknap, first Corresponding Secretary of the Massachusetts Historical Society, is believed to be responsible for this printing for distribution to local colleagues. Evans 28257, MHS 2738.

Written on light pink paper to his uncle, Henry Mackey at Lexington, Va. A plan and account of the battle of Horseshoe Bend, the last battle of the Creek War, after which the Creek leader Red Eagle surrendered to Jackson and signed a treaty abandoning their lands in Southern Georgia and Alabama. The drawing, which is well drawn and detailed, is entitled "A correct View of the Battle of the Horse-Shoe, March 27th 1814... when the Indians were totally destroyed by the unequaled bravery of the gallant sons of Tennessee, commanded by General Jackson." President Jefferson, writing shortly after his last Christmas in the White House, acknowledges receipt of the gift of some botanical speciments and drawings from the pen of Miss Crownenshield. Bentley (1759-1819) was a Unitarian Minister in Salem, Mass. and liberal Jeffersonian. Jefferson refers in the letter to members of the celebrated Crownenshield family of Salem. Jefferson's friend and Secretary of Navy, Jacob Crownenshield had died earlier in the year.
