Depicts a scene of quiet piety and great reverence in an army camp. Shows most of the men with their heads bowed in prayer, some weeping. Stonewall Jackson, a man known for his great religiosity, appears to be delivering a sermon to the men. Also shows a black man kneeling beside Jackson. Volck made a sketch of the actual event at Ball's Bluff, Virginia, which he later used to make this etching. Size in extent is for the mount. The actual size of the etching is 20.2 x 26.7 cm. Depicts a disreputable fellow, cigarette in mouth, motioning toward a broker's office which bears a sign that reads: "Counterfeit Confederate Treasury Notes for Sale. Soldiers under orders to the South supplied with lots to suit at reasonable rates." Two men with him appear to be examining the notes he has purchased. A rather effeminate officer, replete with puffy bloomers and a tiny waist using his saber as a walking stick, stands in the doorway to the establishment. Depicts a scene of urban depravity. Volck is seeking to convey the hypocrisy of the North when it comes to the plight of blacks. The focal point of the sketch is a well-dressed white man who may be Henry Ward Beecher, a leader in the antislavery movement and pastor of a congregation in near Brooklyn, New York. Despite his finery, Beecher does not offer monetary help to the emaciated beggar clothed only in rags: he merely drops a religious "tract" to him with a gloved hand. Depicts a devout, domestic scene of a woman kneeling in prayer amidst the items associated with middle class daily life-a broom, a trunk, an ottoman, a set of silver, a fine hat atop a settee. Only upon closer inspection does one discern that all of these items of daily life, along with a bed discreetly hidden behind a hanging blanket, are closely packed into a rather small space: a cave.
