States "Capt Langhorne's troop, the only cavalry with my command- leaves this morning- I shall therefore be absolutely without the means of communication with Head Quarters & with other Commands- And without cavalry pickets in our flank - I shall be glad if you will hasten the ordering of the promised troops to operate with my Brigade." Enemy gunboats attacked, trying to reach New Orleans, then retreated. Writes of "another turn at the Enemy today - six gun boats and four frigates having come up to point of woods below. All gone back again, and well." Written to his wife in New Orleans. Johnson K. Duncan was a Confederate Brigadier General in command of the coastal defenses that protected New Orleans, including Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip. Seventh Connecticut Infantry Colonel Joseph R. Hawley (Hawley's Brigade) writes to Rev. Jacob Eaton, West Meriden, Connecticut, to tell him that, given the choice for chaplain between him and Rev. Mr. Holmes, and knowing nothing of either of them, the regiment had chosen Holmes. Holmes has gone off with the cavalry, thus is not able to be called. Eaton should come as quickly as he can. Written by General Arnold as commander of one of the two columns marching on Canada (General Philip Schuyler's forces in New York being the other) to Trumbull as Commissary General of Purchases to George Washington's army at Cambridge. In August 1775 Arnold had convinced Washington to give him a command to march through the Maine wilderness to Quebec.
