Also discusses the election of Philip Barbour as Speaker of the House, explaining that he considers "it a triumph of the republicans over the Clintonians, who I have ever considered and viewed as federalists in disguise."

Wing, Deacon Brooks, and Thomas Stirson, but notes that the people of the area are generally in good health. On religion, he writes: "your Minister in Holy things makes a dash now & then (at what he calls Infidells) & then smooths all over with a plaister."

Asks about the progress of the bankruptcy law and if there will be a congressional investigation into "the controversy between General [Andrew] Jackson and the Spanish..."

Probably an event at the Union League Club of New York because the photograph is in a collection with two other photographs of Union League meetings (see GLC04471.14, .15). Circa date inferred in the same manner. There is an inscription at the lower right hand corner, but it is illegible.

The headline announces the firing on Fort Sumter by Confederate Troops, the beginning of the Civil War. Though the South had already seceded, physical confrontation did not begin until the fort was fired on. The paper reports in detail the events that occurred in South Carolina, and the reaction in Washington to these events. At this time most daily newspapers did not print Sunday editions, and since this was a Saturday there was no paper printed on the following day. However the demand for news of the war was so great that on the Times printed its first Sunday edition the very next week.…

Although Fletcher feels that the world has enough of such treatises, he thinks it may be of use to local readers, one-hundred of which have already subscribed. Offers sympathy for "the new measures pursued by great Britain," in reference to the Boston Port Bill. Hugh Knox's letter to Henry Knox on the subject was written on 4 July 1774 (see GLC02437.00161).
