Wonders especially how the Court might intervene in any conflicts between Knox and settlers claiming ownership or rights to his land.

Writes that he has written to Count D'Estaing and Count de Rochambeau for a list of the officers of the royal Army and Navy of France that are members of the Society of the Cincinnati in order to execute their diplomas. Noted as a copy with the docket written in French.

Marked "private" on the docket.

The first letter, to Jeremiah Wadsworth, is contained on pages one and two. Both letters are written from Boston and dated 21 October 1788. In the letter, Knox informs Wadsworth that Mr. [Rufus] King arrived yesterday from New York, relating the news "that there is no congress nor any probability of one." Asks that if he can, he should send it with the bearer of the letter, Richard Smith. Below this is a receipt, signed by Richard Smith, certifying that Knox gave Smith, as an agent for Platt, one thousand dollars on 7 May 1789. The third section, signed by Knox and dated 4 June 1789, certifies that Knox received 500 dollars from Smith on behalf of Platt.

Discusses Ramsay's idea of publishing the names of all the officers in the Continental Army in the appendix of Ramsay's history. Although originally pleased with Ramsay's idea, Knox is now against the idea. "Upon examining the list I found it abounding with omissions and errors." Believes "the loss of papers" can lead to misinformation and inaccuracies, such as officers who were transferred or left the service. Says that he was "convinced that your motive for the publication was to perpetuate honorably the names of the officers of the Army," but now Knox is not sure of this.

Says he should have taken care of it sooner, but he took a ship directly from the West Indies to Boston and had to wait for the goods to arrive in Providence. Says Captain [Thomas] Randall will take care of the arrangements (Randall worked with Shaw). Encloses a letter (not included) to be forwarded to Captain Freeman.
