Title: [10th Massachusetts regiment clothing account book]

Written from camp at Westpoint, Philipsburg, and Pigskill (possibly Peekskill) New York. Notes shoes, clothing, and blankets supplied to each of the soldiers over the course of the year. Contains signatures of the enlisted men with x marks, indicating illiteracy. A section of pages in the middle has been cut out. Book is bound. Dated April 21, 1781-October 1781.

Expects to soon see a printed account of Holten's elections on the new Constitution. Postscript states that General Ward (possibly Artemas Ward) gave Lovell the enclosed and sends his regards.

Discusses the dire economic state of the colonies, inflation, and the depreciation rate of currency. States that according to John Adams, the British will continue the war. Mentions that Maryland has limited the time beyond which the old money will not be accepted. Reports that the other states might not put the resolution of March 18 into place but that Congress is determined it will succeed. Indicates that the debt situation is dire, stating "We, mighty men, totally dependent upon 13 Legislatures, different in views for support in our smallest endeavors to carry on the war."

Signed and approved by John Hancock as a true copy by John Avery. Appropriating 3000 pounds out of the new emission of money for the Treasurer of Massachusetts for use by the delegates of the state at Congress. Imposes a limit of 600 pounds for any individual delegate. The resolution went to the House of Representatives 26 January 1781 and was signed by Caleb Davis, Speaker. Powell was Council President.

Remarks that there is talk of peace due to the mediation of the Empress of Russia (Catherine) and the States of Holland who he believes would otherwise be in favor of the British. Comments that the war has been obstructing trade and depriving them of writing as often as desired. States they have sent the enclosed via Ostend to ensure it arrives. Comments upon the plentiful harvest of olive trees in the area of Cadiz, Spain but fears that the lack of rain will hurt the crops. Mentions that the convoy from Vera Cruz and Havana has come in with gold and silver, indigo, sugar, and tobacco, but only a bit of cacao, which is likely to be in great demand during the war. Wishes that they will soon see an end to it. Newton, Gordon, and Johnston were merchants from Madeira.

Letter written to his brother in Aberdeen, Scotland. States that he wrote awhile ago but has not heard from him since. Remarks that he purchased his commission in the 57th regiment in the British army and expects to get it soon. He wishes he did it awhile ago because he is very short on money and has already borrowed to appropriately outfit himself. Asks his brother if he can borrow 100 pounds right away since he will not be in the country for long. Gives his love to Irvine's wife. Charles Irvine was an ensign in the British army during the Revolutionary War.
