Steedman, a hero of Chickamauga, describes the battle, which he claims as a Union victory. The Union forces suffered heavy losses and were forced to retreat, but Steedman nonetheless claims a "brilliant victory" for the Union, considering the circumstances. Also says the soldiers have great confidence in General Rosecrans, their commander. The name of Gordon Granger, a Union Major General and one of the heroes of the battle, is written on the docket, perhaps a signature.

Indicates that Irvin is "a splendid penman and clerk, and withal, a very fine young man..." General McCook endorses at the bottom of the page, imploring Colonel [Connell?] to find a man who would make a decent ordnance sergeant.
