Written to Lucy Knox, the daughter of Henry and Lucy Knox. Page two also has an appended note from Henry Jackson Knox, the son of Lucy and Henry. The note is signed by Henry and says "love to all." Sarah writes that the family is well. Was shocked to read about the death of Mrs. Lear and her child in the newspaper (a reference to Mary "Polly" Long Lear, who had married Tobias Lear in 1790, and died in the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia). Says General Jackson delivered her letter of 2 July. Sends news of local engagements.

Provides a breakdown of the War Department's salaries for the third quarter of 1793. Includes the salaries for Henry Knox, John Stagg, Philip Audebert, Nathan Jones, James Laugier, Jacob Hoffman, William Burton, and Frederick Sprig. The total amount of the salaries is $1546.47. Knox received $750 for three months as Secretary of War. He made a total of $3,000 for the year. Page two is dated 2 October and has the signatures of all the War Department employees, except Knox, stating they received their pay.

Marked as "an Exact Copy." Signed by Woodruff 1 September 1777. Lists sergeants, corporals, matrosses, gunners, bombardiers, and drum and fifes. Includes comments, time of enlistment, and place of appointment. On verso, contains "Proof of Effectives" chart, noting officers present and absent. Lieutenants Eli Elmor and David Moore sign, certifying the authenticity of the chart. Colonel Richard Humpton, commander of the Second Brigade of General Benjamin Lincoln's Division, signs 3 September 1777.

Discusses the marriages of several friends back home and hopes there will be women left for them when they return from the war. Does not expect to get a furlough. Informs Joseph that he goes on guard duty every third day.

Comments the prayer meetings are well attended. Expresses sorrow for "the neuralgia in his head." Advises him to avoid close confinement. Hopes he will continue to clerk in Memphis through the winter: "I don't feel quite as uneasy about you when you are clerking as when you are marching." Acknowledges the many temptations he must be facing, "but remember that out of them all the Lord is able to deliver you." Asks if he needs any money.

Mentions two friends who enlisted in the army for one year and received a government bounty of five hundred and fifty dollars each. Does not expect the war to last more than another year. Discusses the family finances in great detail.

Says he doesn't have much faith in the peace rumors, "the Rebel Army at Richmond will have to be subdued before the Rebel authorities are willing to come back into the Union."
