These shackles resemble those used during the mid-1800s. Handwrought iron, consisting of two leg shackles linked by a flat iron plate. Could have been used for enslaved people, but also might have been used in a jailhouse for criminals.

Until this point is satisfactorily settled we cannot reach the expediency or inexpediency, the advantage or disadvantage of this system of servitude." Currently awaiting the Czar's answer to the peace terms offered by Austria and presumably accepted by France and England. Comments that the British "seem determined, if possible, to regain the prestige which they have lost in the last two campaigns," and were expanding their navy in anticipation of a third campaign.

Page 68 contains an official statement submitted 25 August 1889 by Louis A. Walker, Secretary of the Territory of Montana, witnessing the authenticity of the constitutional document. Lists William Andrews Clark as president of the convention.

Records various expenditures incurred during Indian treaty negotiations. A certification of the expenses along with a comment that "the United States will acquire at least Three Millions of Dollars, from the extra cession of territory obtained by that treaty is signed ant dated 2 June 1796. Another note date 10 June 1796 attests to the receipt of some of the monies and discusses other expenses.

Written while Smith was commander of defenses at Richmond (expanded to become the Department of Virginia and North Carolina). Contains a dispatch from Smith to the officer in command of Fredericksburg, Virginia dated 21 November 1862, stating that the Mayor of Fredericksburg telegraphed Smith the news that Fredericksburg is to be shelled the following day. Smith asks if he should send cars for the removal of women and children. Contains a letter from Smith to General William H. C. Whiting at Wilmington, North Carolina (21 November), assuring Whiting that everything practicable will be done…
