Title: Minutes of Albany Council meeting

Livingston had applied to the Town Council of Albany for an increase in salary from £15 to £20, because the county of Albany, which had previously allotted Livingston £5, had discontinued this practice. However, the Council denied the request, claiming the burden of mounting debts.

Pynchon sends news of New England Governor [Edmund Andros's ] excursion to find Indians in Maine, Governor's non-return, leading to fears of his demise. Rumors are passed along about an invasionary fleet sailing from Holland to England carrying the Prince of O[range]. Pynchon hopes that the news of the Dutch invasion of England is untrue, as otherwise Europe would be covered by "yt Efusion of Ch[ris]tian Blood," as all parties would gain more if they were "uniting together agt ye the French who are not ye best Neighbors." He also sends news of a battle between the forces of Prince Louis XIV…

Title: [Barbara Fietchie at the Great Central Fair]

Barbara Frietchie gained fame for telling T. J. "Stonewall" Jackson to harm her rather than the Union flag at the time he entered Frederick, Maryland. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published the poem in Nov. 1863 and it was printed with the carte to raise money for the war effort. The Great Central (Sanitary) Fair in Philadelphia opened in 1864. (Lincoln addressed the fair in 6/16/1864)

Thanks the General for a copy of Ritchie's own letter from 1836, in which he argued for the annexation of Texas. Recalls that he sent a similar letter to Secretary of State Martin Van Buren around the same time, and that Van Buren seemed to agree with him. Remembers that it was, ironically, Van Buren's later opposition to annexation that cost him the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1844. This letter comes from Alfred E. Burr's scrapbook, but it is unclear who the "General" was. The docket, which is written in a separate hand, but also addressed to "Gen." suggests that the letter…

Title: [Revocation of Cyrus Griffin's power of attorney][copy]

Witnessed by Leroy Peachy, Samuel Griffin, and William Griffin. The power of attorney had been granted by Burges Ball and John Payne, and their wives, and pertained to the administration of land in Virginia. Also contains a copy of the identity and marriage certification made by James Gordon, the justice of the peace for Lancaster County, Virginia, as well as James Ball, Dale Carter, and Richard Mitchell. A note on the verso by Thomas Griffin indicates that the certification was recorded in a court in Lancaster County on 15 September 1774.
