Jackson is twenty eight miles from New Market, and "only about 16 miles from Fishers Gap." Also asks Ewell to send communications to General Johnston for him. Accompanied by two non-contemporary clippings describing document that were used during its sale. Written at "Swift Run Gap." One right profile and one seated engraving of Jackson included.

Letter describing the stalling tactics he wishes to take against the British as he led the American rearguard. Claims the British troops under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton left Hillsborough, North Carolina the previous night. Says militia are collecting and will advance on the enemy's right flank. Thinks it best that he joins North Carolina Governor Abner Nash once the enemy moves again and…

Cameron, a United States Senator from Pennsylvania, informs Fessenden, a United States Senator from Maine, that Pennsylvania is as likely as Maine or Massachusetts to elect Abraham Lincoln as President and Hannibal Hamlin as Vice President in the 1860 election. Written from Lochiel, Cameron's Harrisburg residence. Fessenden served as a U.S. congressman (1841-1842) and senator (1854-1864; 1865-1869), and as Secretary of the Treasury (1864-1865). Docketed by Fessenden on verso.

Informs that he is sending two men as prisoners of war, Thomas Page and Joseph Dawson. States that the men say they deserted from the British but Marion suspects they may be spies. " ... I suspect from their Characters they are sent as Spies, and thought best to have them conducted to you." Advises that they have run out of rum and do not have wagons to go for more. Also states that they are in need of cartridges. Written as Lieutenant Colonel to Major General Benjamin Lincoln. With small clipping from a past sale describing the letter.
