Insists on commenting on accounts General Crane had left for him. Knox had the paymaster go over Crane's account with great care so that it would be satisfactory to both Crane and the public. Knox writes that "the result doe not leave any balance in your favor." Knox is currently not in possession of the statements, but will take care of the matters as soon as he returns [to New York] so that "the difficulties will be removed."

Fears he is bothering Knox by continuing to bring up the status of Captain [Denis Nicholas] Cottineau [de Kloguene]'s claim to be admitted as a member of the Society of the Cincinnati (he spells it "Sincinaty"). Says he wrote twice to Knox, but has not received a response. Reports that Cottineau writes Zollickoffer from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, whenever he can, for this information. Hopes Knox can find some information "by which means Capt. Cottineau would be more easier than he appears." Says Captain Cottineau should direct his application to those gentlemen. Place not listed, however, another letter (GLC02437.05074) written on the same day places Knox in Philadelphia.

Top half of this document is dated 11 October from Philadelphia. The bottom half is dated 14 October from New York. The Philadelphia report gives a grim account of the yellow fever outbreak. The New York report says 137 were officially buried in Philadelphia last Friday, not including independent burials. A short list of individuals who died on 11 October (including Major [David] Franks) is provided at the very bottom of this document.

Mentions Bastia surrendered to Lord Hood, mostly due to lack of supplies. Notes there have been several French ships cruising in the Mediterranean, even with the British nearby. Comments the Spaniards were once again defeated in Catalonia. Mentions a rumor about Knox retiring.

Previous research suggests the document was written in May 1796; that date was added in pen on page one at a later time. A petition on behalf of several members of the Waldo and Winslow families for a portion of the Falmouth lands in Maine. A note at bottom says that the letter was sent to General Henry Knox via Joseph Peirce. Signed by Samuel Waldo on behalf of William Wetmore, Sarah Waldo Wetmore, Elizabeth Winslow, Lucy Waldo, Isaac Winslow, and George W. Irving.

Winslow informs Knox that he is "suffering much injury from Pillagers upon your Lands in Falmouth." Winslow says that "the Secretary of the Treasury, has instituted an investigation of the Conduct of the Marshal of this District, in consequence of some complaints exhibited against Him, in a Letter to the President." Winslow asks that Knox not tell the attorney, Mr. Davis, that he wrote or knows about the matter. Winslow hopes that Knox could perhaps mention him to fill the position of Marshal of the District.

Winslow informs Knox, "I have pursued unremittingly the Steps requisite to promote your desire of speedily commanding monies for some of your Lots in Falmouth, as express'd in your last Lettr." Winslow explains whom he has been in contact with and who has interest in purchasing the lots, including "Capt. S. Noyes." Land belonging to Mrs. Flucker and Mr. Waldo have been reduced, Winslow writes. Winlsow expects that Knox will keep to his word about deals and interest agreements he has made. Winslow breaks down how the Waldo land holding have been distributed among the Waldo heirs.

Had decided to follow the plan Knox was kind enough to arrange for him, determined to go to Louisiana, and declined an opportunity at a school. However, the letter from Winslow suggested Knox might not be in favor of the plan after all, and Winslow suggested he go to New York to consult with several sponsors of the expedition.
