Signature is clipped. Creator indicated in docket. Discusses the arrival of the brig Columbia from Canton (present-day Guangzhou, China). On board the ship, there is property from [Samuel] Shaw "to be Improved in Building a Ship..." The ship is to be built under the direction of Mr. Peck. Awaits letters from Samuel Ogden before he shall proceed with business regarding the ship's supercargo, Eli Hayden. Encloses Shaw's draft on Ogden, writing "I am under the Necessity of giving this Trouble, as so large a Bill will not readily sell."

Expresses disappointment with Mr. Peck's ideas regarding the planned construction of a ship. Writes, "If his demand should be so Extravagant as we cannot comply with, shall the ship stand still, or shall another person be appointed to Construct & superinted [sic] the Building. I expect there is other Ship Builders besides Mr. Peck." Samuel Shaw gave Parkman the authority to hire Peck; Parkman asks Knox's advice, since he cannot hire another builder besides Peck without Shaw's approval. "Free" handwritten on address leaf with no signature.

Discusses traveling to the Illinois Territory and asks Knox to give orders to General [Josiah] Harmar (he spells it "Harmer") on the subject.

If the Jay arrives they will replace him the other $2000 that way if the Jay is lost Parkman only has to wait for the insurance to be recovered. Possibly written by Isaac Parker, a Federalist Massachusetts Congressman, who served from 1797-1799.

Knox says Nutting has to go to Boston to see Knox's agents Jonathan Jackson and Joseph Peirce regarding this business. Jackson will pay Nutting the "amount of the freight, and a small balance" of $32.84.

Consists of two letters written in the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide de camp. In the first, which composes the top half of the page, Colonel Crane and Lieutenant Colonel Stevens inform Major General Knox that upon inspection, a quantity of salted beef in the contractor's store has been found "unmerchantable and unfit for use." The bottom half of the page consists of a letter from Knox to [Daniel] Parker and [William] Duer. Knox informs them that the beef is putrefied and "grows worse and worse, so that I have been obliged to order the inspection."

Patten, Captain of a company of artificers, requests to receive the same pay as officers of the artillery. Complains that the men belonging to his company are from different states, "and have had their depreciation [in pay] made up to them from the several states to whitch they belong, and not upon equal establishment..." Lists the amounts paid by several states. Requests extra pay and a horse for his service as paymaster and clothier for the company.
