Inscribed by "The author" to Stephen Elliot on cover wrapper and signed again at the bottom of the dedication page. First edition. Turnbull became the leader of the nullification movement in the South and, after his untimely death in 1833, was succeed by Robert Barnwell Rhett. DAB notes "It is doubtful if the thinking of the people of any state has ever been more influenced by a single publication as was that of South Carolina by this work." The Crisis p. 137, Howes T420.

Title: A Treatise on the Improvement of Canal Navigation

First edition. Quarto. With 17 engraved plates (some folding). Printed by I. and J. Taylor. Fulton's first important work. Fulton used this book to gain public recognition and indisputable credentials as an engineer. His plans and improvements for the Peak Forest canal in Manchester convinced the canal company to pay the cost of printing 200 copies of Fulton's book. Bound in original marble boards.

Title: Blank printed bill of sale for slaves from Jefferson's estate, for T.J. Randolph

Apparently an unused bill of sale for the disposal of Jefferson's slaves by Thomas Jefferson Randolph, Jefferson's grandson and executor of his will. "Know all men by these presents, that I, Thomas J. Randolph, Executor of Thomas Jefferson... have bargained and sold, and by these presents do bargain and sell to the said [blank] certain [blank] negro slave [blank], named [blank] late the property of Thomas Jefferson, deceased."

General Winchester's correspondence includes letters received as the highest ranking American prisoner in Canada. Later his correspondence includes documents relating to the British attack on New Orleans in 1815. Highlights include a manuscript map of the area around Ohio's Raisin River and letters received describing the British approach by sea to New Orleans.

Collection of 41 items primarily concerning Andersonville Prison, although other Southern prisons, such as Castle Thunder and Libby Prison (both located in Richmond, Va.), are also briefly documented here. Andersonville Prison, located in Andersonville, Ga., housed Union enlisted troops incarcerated by Confederate forces, and operated from 25 February 1864 to late April 1865. Officially designated as Camp Sumter, it held more than 33,000 prisoners, while its cemetery provided graves for 12,000, although actual death toll may have been much higher.
