Knox reports that he has made all the necessary arrangements to leave West Point "and in a few [hours]... shall set out for Boston. The public interest has been my actuating principle in the cause of this business and I flatter myself will meet your approbation." Written in the hand of Samuel Shaw. Creator inferred from the draft (GLC02437.10186) in Knox's hand. On behalf of the officers "remaining on the banks of the Hudson," Knox responds to General Washington's farewell address to the army. Thanks Washington for the address and states that the failure to fully recompense officers was beyond Washington's control. Lists accomplishments of army and the officers. Noted as a copy in the docket. Watermarked. Date inferred by date of Knox's covering letter (GLC02437.02772).

Says he heard Allen did not receive Knox's order, originally sent in November, until the beginning of December ordering Allen to disband the Rhode Island regiment. Instructs Allen to immediately disband if he has not already done so and to send Knox confirmation (see GLC02437.02863 for Allen's confirmation of the number of troops discharged; refer to GLC02437.10191 and GLC02437.10195 for related correspondence).
