Alexander Gardner's camp - photgraphing maps for the army in the field. See Mathew Brady and His World, page 207. Two men are seated in front of a log cabin with a tent streched over it as a roof, one in its doorway and one on a high table. Also on the table is a large folding camera lens, the end of which is covered by a cloth. Numeric notation on verso: "4."

Taken by O'Sullivan. Frassanito states that this is the earliest known photograph of the gatehouse after the battle. The artillery earthworks occupied by Stewart's Battery B, 4th U.S. Arty. can be seen in the foreground. Seated in the wagon that is on the Baltimore Pike are a few of the many civilians that would flock to the battlefield shortly after the fighting was over. See GLC 5111.01.0225, .0305

The image shows the earthen bomproof rampart [the "pulpit"] at Fort Fisher with the ocean in the background. Two chimneys constucted out of bricks can be seen along with seven soldiers lounging in and around the shelters. Two men lean on posts by the chimney, two sit on the ground, two more sit on the opposite side and the seventh is visible in the upper right of the image. A row of rifles [stacked arms] runs down the center of the trench. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." Numeric notation on verso: "XXII" and "535."

Hunt, Chief of Artillery of the Army of the Potomac. Captain F.A. Pratt is on the left. Captain E.C. Don is just behind Colonel Abott and Major T.S. Trumbell is just behind General Hunt on his left.

The address on the building reads "148."A man and a young boy stand just inside the doorway and another man looks out the window on the right. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." A man stands next to an the entrance of a bom-proof magazine. In the left background, the stockade wall can be seen. Numeric notation on verso: "196."
