Typed on printed stationery dated from Cincinnati. Taft writes Johnson of the Century Magazine that Andrew Carnegie's article on tariffs will prove useful in revising schedules. Carnegie argued, according to Taft, that the US could produce steel more cheaply than abroad.

Extract of a journal pertaining to the French naval campaign during the American Revolution. Briefly lists actions and movement of the French navy under Comte de Grasse. Covers period from French leaving Brest, France, up until shortly before the defeat of de Grasse's forces at the Battle of the Saintes. Includes fighting in Chesapeake Bay, Battle of Yorktown, French capture of Saint Kitts, and other events.

Certificate, signed by Fulton, entitling Cadwallader D. Colden to one share of "Hudson River Steam Boat Stock" upon payment of $500. Certificate refers to May 13, 1814, articles of agreement and August 1, 1814 memorandum of agreement between Fulton and Colden and contains receipt, acknowledging payment of $250. Colden (1769-1834), Robert Fulton's friend, lawyer, and first biographer, later became mayor of New York and a U.S. congressman. Ayres's copyright blindstamp has been made twice in the image. Inscribed, signed and dated by Ayres in ink on the reverse: "Copyright, 1897. Enlarged from the original negative owned by Geo. B. Ayres, Artist, Philadelphia." Ostendorf 26. The negative was made in Springfield on 6/3/1860 by Alexander Hesler. George B. Ayres bought the studio with contents.
