Expresses concern that the departure of Colonel [Philip van] Cortlandt's regiment left the Fort's artillery and stores in a vulnerable state: "...we are no protection to the Inhabitants & in Case the Enemy should make an attempt upon us I fear the Consequence." Reports that Captain Elsworth and two other men were recently killed "by the Indiands [sic] they took three prisoners also amongst the latter is one of my Compy..." "Public service" noted on address leaf.

Replies to a letter from Captain Moodie (GLC02437.01107): "I am much pain'd at the disagreeable state of things at Fort Herkimer and sincerely wish it was in my power to remedy these." Refers to an order for thread and paper (possibly used in musket cartridges) requested by Moodie. Adds that Mr. [Brewster] will inform him "of the recruits so long expected from Capt. Mathias." Written at Phillipsburg (present-day Sleepy Hollow, New York).

Tells him to provide himself with clothes for a command of considerable length of time. Says Knox is very anxious for his arrival, which should be before sunset tonight.
