Reprints Johnston's farewell to the troops of the Army of Tennessee following his surrender to Union General William T. Sherman. Advises his troops to obey the surrender terms. Thanks the men for their devotion and wishes them prosperity and happiness. With an article on the side praising Johnston and another titled, "Our Returned Soldiers," welcoming them home.

Discusses the Gordon Riots, mentioning that there are 25,000 soldiers in London and 60-70 of the rioters were shot (and many others taken prisoner). Reports that Lord George Gordon (the rioters' leader) was questioned by the Privy Council and "sent to the Tower under a strong Guard." Criticizes the anti-Catholic mob, who desired the repeal of the 1778 Relief Act and a return to Catholic repression. Describing one night of the riots, he writes: "it appeared as if all London from one End to the other had been in flames."

They rested after the previous battle before pursuing the rebels, overtaking their rear as they were crossing the water. He has worked with the rebel wounded left in the surrounding farm houses. As he prepares to treat the wounded from the Battle of Fredericksburg, an attack launched by 50,000 Union troops at dawn on Dec. 13, he discusses the possibility of being hit and makes arrangements for his belongings. He believes heavy losses are inevitable. The spirits of the troops are high. "If you fancy the approach of such a battle depresses the spirits of men or officers you are greatly mistaken.
