Writes to recommend several people to serve as American Commissioners to Great Britain, including a Mr. [Christopher] Gore, a Mr. [Theophilus] Parsons, and Judge [James] Sullivan, the Attorney-General of Massachusetts, "in pursuance of the late treaty" (Jay's Treaty). Was asked by friends to recommend these individuals. He and his wife send their respects to Mrs. Washington.

Cites his preoccupation with the construction work being done on his home, as well as the conflict of interest he faces due to his land ownership in Maine. Suggests Colonel [Jeremiah] Wadsworth or Judge [James] Sullivan instead. Adds that he has written to Colonel [Timothy] Pickering suggesting that he might remain at the head of the committee for the time being, in order to suggest that the Committee would appear ready to execute the treaty at any time. Signature was clipped, but handwriting suggests the author is Sarah Lyons Flucker Beaumez, Knox's sister-in-law. Was unable to forward the power of attorney to Knox via Mr. [Christopher] Gore, who returned to Boston earlier than she expected. Discusses her children's inheritance of a portion of the Waldo patent lands. Mentions that she would like Mr. [Christopher] Gore, Colonel [Jeremiah] Wadsworth, and her husband Mr. Beaumez to act as trustees. Touches on family gossip. Sends her love to Knox, his wife, and their children, Lucy, Julia, Washington and Caroline.

Discusses their travels and plans to relocate, apparently to Wilmington or Philadelphia, and explains why she hopes her children will be happy with the new arrangements. Encourages Lucy and her daughters to write to her at Wilmington.

Attaching copies of two letters from Samuel Waldo and from Thomas Vose (see GLC02437.06621 and GLC02437.06623), Knox petitions the government to protect his property against the lawless "banditti," including Samuel Ely, who Knox argues was involved in the 1786 insurrection in western Massachusetts and is "a person said to be obnoxious to the laws."

Marked as "Extracts of a letter to Wm Bingham Esq." Portions are written in two different hands. The first portion discusses a land purchase and refers to the opinion of General [Henry] Jackson on the subject. The second portion, likely in Knox's hand, gives Bingham "a carte blanche" to complete a financial arrangement and do what ever is necessary to "get me the money." The third portion, also likely in Knox's hand, discusses purchases of land and again refers to the involvement of General Jackson.

Burton and Philip Audebert mention that Knox had previously given them certificates verifying that they had remained in Philadelphia during a fever yellow epidemic in 1793. Write that Congress is now considering providing compensation to those who remained, but the Clerk of Congress has misplaced their certificates. Ask Knox to prepare new ones for them so they might be able to receive the benefits they are owed. Signed by both Burton and Audebert.

Asks that he speak with Mr. [Samuel] Hodgdon on the subject (see GLC02437.06662). Apologizes for all the trouble he is giving Bingham, but says that sometimes, "the fate of individuals and their families depend upon the interference and support of a single friend."
