Reports that the enemy has been cut off while on the Tombigbee River. Cannonading has been heard every day as well as prisoners taken in. Writes that rebel paper is pretty and that there is plenty available in the area. Also writes that the corn is about two feet high and the wheat is ripe. The letter includes a note from King to Weeks' father.

Writes that there was a brush with secesh cavalry who charged into the 7th Kansas cavalry. Seventeen men were killed two of which belong to Weeks' regiment. Complains that the Tribune misused a statement made by him to Wendell Phillips at the recent meeting of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. The statement concerned John C. Fremont, who was active in the Radical Republicans, a group of hard-line abolitionists upset with Lincoln's position toward slavery. Demands that the Tribune insert a correction and print what was said as per the official report of the proceedings of the Society. Signed on first page but one line written on verso, "Mr. Garrison said - I wish to propose, &c."

Recalls an excursion he took with his father, William Lloyd Garrison toward the end of his life. Talks of his fear of giving speeches "Like my father, to his latest day, when called upon to speak I always feel like fumbling for a manuscript. An habitual writer allows his tongue to become atrophied for want of use..." States that despite this, he will consider an invitation to speak.

States of the landlady, "I understand that she sets a very good table, if that is any inducement to you." Written from Rockledge, the Garrison home in Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts.
