Because he did not steal silver, as they "supposed all 'Yanks' were in the habit of doing, they have always felt very grateful" for the protection and whiskey he provided them, and they agreed to act as benefactors for Mollie, Moore's niece, in her musical study. Wants to send money home but states that most letters with money in it never reach their destination. Mentions some acquaintances. Informs that he has not received his box yet and that he has heard that no boxes have left Washington since December 20th.
