He has also mentioned this desire to Colonel David Cobb, formerly Jackson's second in command. Mentions tentative plans to visit Lucy, Knox's wife. Knox's response written in Philadelphia Pennsylvania appears on the verso. General George Washington ordered General Benjamin Lincoln to lead the American Army south to invest Yorktown, and Jackson is ordered to join him. Verso is a Henry Knox autograph letter signed dated 30 August 1781 to Colonel John Lamb.

Sends General Henry Knox a bass, caught near the port where Jackson is at present. Describes the fish as a Mr. Bass, a possible spy for the enemy and warns him to be on guard at West Point for a sudden attack. States that Knox should "examine him [Mr. Bass] well & if he will not give you a good account of himself, you had better cut him up joint by joint, ... pour hot melted Butter & Pa[r]sley over him & if he should then remain refractory, the best to be done with him will be to drownd [sic] him in good old [mead ?]."

Jackson writes, "...I have sent the Barge to convey you here- indeed if you have nothing definitive respecting an establishment, on the Troops in service, it is absolutely necessary for you to be here, if only for a day- many matters want your determination as Commander in Chief." Knox had been in Annapolis, Maryland, apparently to discuss military matters before Congress.

Advises Knox to allow his notes to "take their chance in the Bank... for to sell them at the present going price (which is very low) would be doing such a great injury to your family that you would forever be unhappy afterwards." Suggests that Knox obtain a loan from New York Bank to pay his bills due in Boston if he cannot obtain back pay he is owed.

Writes that Colonel [possibly James] Swan will deliver six pair of white silk hose for Knox, which Jackson had ordered from overseas through a Mr. Debloise for his own use. Had ordered twelve pairs, but only kept six, "as that will be a sufficient supply for me, since I have [commenced] a soldier & shall wear boots more than shoes." Writes that they are top quality, and have just come off the ship.
