The letters begin with his recruitment camp (Camp Siegel) in September 1862, and end with the election, just after the fall of Atlanta at Kingston, Georgia, on 8 November 1864. Includes the Battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River) (see letter 12, long and graphic), Knoxville, Chattanooga and the fall of Atlanta.
