Makes a lengthy, poetic comparison of the reception of Knox's last letter to a lost sailor finding land. Also gives a lengthy explanation for why he has not written sooner and apologizes for being remiss. Continues with a discussion of friendship, love, and beauty. Notes that they have received the resolutions from the First Continental Congress. Offers lofty praise of the virtuous and resolute Bostonians and the American movement for freedom, and denounces the Intolerable Acts and the "Tyranny of Kings." Asks Knox to find an excuse for Waldo's mother, who has accused Waldo of neglect for not writing. States that running a store is very time consuming and prevents him from writing. Mentions that he sent a package with letters and newspapers to Knox and asks Knox if he received it.

Indicates that he is in desperate need of printing ink and wants Knox to procure it for him. Discusses pricing for Rivington's edition of Lord Chesterfield's Letters, asking Knox to find purchasers immediately because the resolutions for non-importation issued by the first Continental Congress will soon take effect. Mentions that a fire and legislative action have caused a delay in a lottery Knox had a ticket for. Rivington was a bookseller, printer, and journalist who came to America in 1760. He published Rivington's New-York Gazetteer.

Tells Knox that he has sent loyalist pamphlets to his friend Mr. Bates, the "Burser of the Swan man of war" which will set sail for Boston on 2 December 1774. Explains that he did not send them directly to Knox because Knox's friends "on the patriot interest, may be greatly disgusted at your distributing them." But since Knox has shown interest in selling them, Rivington will furnish him with such pamphlets. Rivington was a bookseller, printer, and journalist who came to America in 1760. He published Rivington's New-York Gazetteer.

Explains that the militia officers will examine that every man is provided with arms and ammunition, as accorded by law. Asks Knox to purchase arms for him. Also asks Knox's opinion of the times. The Revolutionary War was about to start and the Continental Congress had advised the colonies to begin training their citizens for war.

Comments, "The Rebels Show themselves once in a While along the banks of the River but they all leave as soon as We give them a shot they Will not fight unless they have the advantage and then they fight like Bull Dogs and I whish that they were all in the Oven of the Eavel [evil] One and a good Fire under the Same." On patriotic stationery with the title "Onward." Featuring a young woman holding a flag and pointing forward. The woman wears a "flag" dress, has long flowing hair and is barefooted. The dates 1776 and 1861 appear on either side of the woman. Date inferred from content.

He arrived in camp two weeks ago. The regiment received their uniforms and expect to be issued their weapons with in the week. They drill four hours a day and spend the rest of their time playing cards or laying in their quarters. Written at Fort Warren.

Title: to William Smallwood

Enclosing report to General Washington regarding the state of the regiment. Richardson has small pox and has inoculated the entire regiment. Complains of lack of officers, hardship and illness. It is a "wonder that they don't die at a much faster pace." He also expresses some discontent regarding commissions, "as I have not had influence enough to make a single officer... and strangers are put in that have never seen service."

Appoints the recipient as Adjutant of the eighteenth Connecticut militia regiment. The Jonathan Humphry who died in 1778 is the author of this letter. At the time he was the colonel of the eighteenth Connecticut militia regiment. He was also a lawyer. The Jonathan Humphry who died in 1812 was the recipient of this letter. He would later become colonel of the regiment himself.

Appointing Jonathan Humphry a lieutenant colonel in the Connecticut militia. Also signed by George Wyllys as secretary. Seal of Connecticut affixed. Partially printed. There were multiple Jonathan Humpries from Simsbury, Connecticut who served during the American Revolution. The Jonathan Humphry who died in 1778 is the author of the letter and the subject of the commission. He was a lawyer.
