Hammond to wife. Although the month of the letter is not known, the letter was likely written on August 22nd, 1864 based on what is known about Hammond's whereabouts during the war and that of the 189th New York. Hopes letter finds her in good health and good spirits. Talk of joining a regiment and going to Elmiru [Elmira]. Consoles her, reminding her that he would only be gone for a little while. Glad to hear from her that all is well. Was sent along with nine other men to unload some horses at the depot. Got dinner in town; did not return until dark. His captain has been looking to get into a new regiment. Samantha wrote that she wanted to come visit if he was not coming home any time soon. "If they come if you want to come," she is welcome to come. Warns that it is very hard to get down to his location because they would not be able to get close to the camp until dark. All are "enjoying good healthy and laying in camp." Not much to do. Wishes he could see her and the rest of his family. Thirty miles from Petersburg. Draftees and substitutes get sent to the front line immediately. Has been "some time" since he heard from her. Wants to know if she has received the money he sent her. Has been cooling down significantly in the area. "It is Sunday, but I can't see [any] difference; it is all the same here." Wants to know if she has dug the potatoes yet.
